Genealogical Research Paul Orton, Red Flag's Director, has carried out much research into his ancestry, and into Ginette's ancestry. Paul is currently researching the life (and times) of Thomas Tew, the Rhode Island Pirate. The findings will be published in due course. In the meantime, you can see some of my research on my Thomas Tew pages. Below you will see pictures of those ancestors that I have photos for. OrtonMy g3 grandfather was Joseph Orton, who was born somewhere in Leicestershire around 1780, and lived with his second wife Mary in South Kilworth. I recently discovered that he was from the nearby village of Kimcote, where at least three generations of his ancestors lived. My g and g-g grandfathers on the Orton side both married Woodfords.
There are two nearby villages of Orton and Woodford, so it seems quite
likely that the families had been in this area for centuries. I am a member of the Orton Family History Society, a society encouraging research into
Ortons and their descendents. Follow the link to their home page (another Red Flag Ltd.
production). Hogley (and Ogley)
My paternal grandmother was Marian Hogley. Although I never knew her, as
she died in 1928, I have always been interested in my Hogley heritage. I am carrying out a
one-name study of the Hogley name (which includes 'Ogley', as the two names were often
confused). The name Hogley/Ogley is a West Riding name, and is a particularly rare
name
which is difficult to find much about. If you are interested, have a look at my Hogley and Ogley page, the content of which is developing as
I go on. I have also a page on my great-great grandfather Stephen Enoch Hogley the painter. This page is developing,
but carries pictures of many of his paintings, so will be slow loading. Tew
My Tew ancestors lived in Shalstone in Bucks in the 18th and 19th Centuries, and I have recently found relatives who can trace them back to Northamptonshire in the 15th Century, long before the Parish Registers. Click here to read about the history of the Tew name. Thomas Tew the PirateMy g7great uncle, or my 1st or 2nd cousin many times removed
was probably the 17th Century Rhode Island pirate Thomas Tew, whose
death was reported in 1695. Click here to see my research on him. Roberts
My maternal grandmother was Annie Roberts from Llandyfrydog, Ynys Môn, Cymru (Anglesey, Wales to non-Welsh speakers like me). This is harder line to trace, but I am working my way back slowly through three generations of copper miners on the Parys Mountain (Henry, Richard and William were all copper miners and farmers). All my other surnames are rare, which makes my research easier. This side of the family ends that tradition with Roberts and Williams, the 15th and 4th most popular names in the country.
