Marian
Hogley
Born 25 April 1899 in Holmfirth, one of 7 girls and 3 boys.
She went to Leeds University where she qualified in history. |
HWO served in the
Great War where he won a Military Cross at the battle of the Ancre, on the Somme (the
Battle of which had just ended). He was a Temporary Second Lieutenant in the 1st
Battalion, Dorset Regiment (suggesting that he was not from the 'officer
class', his father being a builder). His medal was awarded for "conspicuous gallantry in action. He
displayed great courage and initiative in reinforcing and holding the most advanced points
reached in our attack, thereby checking an enemy bombing attack. He was wounded."
The action took place on 18 November 1916.
After being wounded he spent time on Salisbury Plain training troops for service in
France, and was promoted to Captain. After the war he studied at Leeds University, where
he became Senior Student, and was also elected Secretary of the Students Union. When he
had gained his degree (BA) he moved to the College of the Resurrection at
Mirfield, where he trained as a vicar.

It was in Leeds that he met Marian, and they married in Holmfirth Parish Church
on 22 Aug 1923. The photo shews:

man was Frank (or maybe Cecil) Woodford, HWO's cousin |
| Michael Woodford was born 12 October 1924, followed by Barbara Mary and Francis
John. Sadly Marian died of cancer on 19 Jun 1928, when her oldest child was three, and her
youngest only nine months. She was laid to rest at Streatham Cemetery. HWO
